If you wonder why potholes are not fixed, why state rights of ways are not maintained and drainage ditches overflow and why repaving is erratic and inconsistent, you may want to learn a little about the past and current history of roads in South Carolina.   As a member of the State Legislature, I gained insight into why a small state that is at the back of the pack in many important indices, not the least of which is education, is at the front of the pack in others. But the two back to back reports in the Greenville News tell the story.  I think they are worth the read.

Today, South Carolina has the fourth-largest state-maintained road system in the nation, with more than 41,000 miles.
