23 May She knows Beaufort and how it works like to back of her hand

Connie Hipp, the heart, soul and backbone of Leadership Beaufort, is a great figure in our community. If you graduated from Leadership Beaufort, you know what I mean. If you have not been part of Leadership Beaufort, you should apply so you can work with Connie.  She knows the community like the back of her hand. How a ‘30-year volunteer’ is helping to make Beaufort a better place  ...

23 May We cannot afford to be like a diabetic in denial

We cannot afford to be like a diabetic in denial when in comes to speaking out loud and doing something to mitigate sea level rise. When asked to speak to groups about rising sea levels I  avoid using politically charged phrases like "climate change, carbon emissions or melting glaciers."  Instead, I talk about what I have seen through my own eyes in the Beaufort River and the many creeks around us.  I share that I saw the tide rise over eight inches on the dock that was in front of my house...

23 May The Extra Mile Club

Saturday morning I attended  the "Pledge Breakfast" where Beaufortonians, primarily from northern Beaufort County,  gathered in the social hall of Mt Carmel Baptist Church in Dale to provide financial support for the Extra Mile Club. I learned about the EMC and wrote about it several years ago. Saturday was such a refreshing experience to hear and see the story of personal and community commitment that I want to share. Starting as the  dream of Chris Dantzler and supported by his energetic and well organized wife Gaynelle, the Extra Mile Club is designed to help young...

23 May Some may be surprised by this Walmart response

Twice last week, I was invited to speak at two events at the Ladys Island Walmart. Standing in front of 250+ eager new employees, many of whom will no longer have to drive 2-4 hours a day  to jobs elsewhere,  I was incredibly moved. They cheered with pride when I asked how many lived on Ladys or St Helena Islands.  And when I asked how many would now be able to see their children off to school in the mornings,  rather than leaving that to someone else or the children alone, they cheered.  When...

23 May A pleasant reminder from Council Member Stephen Murray

As the City Council and City Redevelopment Commission member charged with leading the city's job diversification efforts and who represents the City as Chairman of  The Beaufort County Economic Development Corporation, Stephen Murray  shared a refreshing thought. Thank you Stephen and the many others who continue to take on the challenge for better jobs and a better Beaufort County for the young people who grow up here. "I had the pleasure of attending Fridays @ The Corridor  (Beaufort Digital Corridor) yesterday morning. David (Nelems from the Don Ryan Center for Innovation in Bluffton and now...

16 May The Beaufort Code – One Careful Step at a Time

Creating a new development code to match the City's Civic Master Plan is no easy task, though it is important.  It has been reviewed by scores of lay people, professionals, the planning commission and is now on its way to City Council for consideration.  In fact this evening, we will start reviewing as a group all of the citizen comments, staff responses and public comments from two public hearings. Furthermore, we have appointed a committee of seasoned contractors, developers and lay people who will not begin the process of "field testing"...

16 May Newspapers Oppose Seismic Testing and Drilling

Fortunately, after the foundation was laid in past years against seismic testing and drilling for oil and gas off of the south Atlantic Ocean, state wide and local newspapers are chiming in against the administration's turn around to not only allow but to encourage testing and drilling. One good one appeared in the Post and Courier: Hold line against offshore oil There was a also a good one in the Packet Gazette: Oil drilling, seismic testing still a bad idea  ...

16 May Meet Us at the Corridor – The Beaufort Digital Corridor

Fridays @ the Corridor - Reminder From Ideation to Action: The Lean Canvas Business Plan When asked whether they read the lengthy business plans that entrepreneurs feel compelled to painstakingly compile, fewer than 2% of investors and stakeholders admit they do, preferring instead the 1-page executive summary, the 10-page slide deck, or the 30-second elevator pitch. At the May Fridays @ the Corridor event, David Nelems, Director of the Don Ryan Center for Innovation, will introduce the Lean Canvas Business plan, a business blueprint process that makes planning actionable, while guiding the entrepreneur...
