04 Oct Third World Nations Have Less Taxes

While some, including myself oppose raising taxes, I believe the gas tax is worth considering. Last week when driving to the upper part of the state for a meeting, I bounced through pot holes, felt changing qualities of road surfaces and realized that in terms of infrastructure SC is fast becoming more like a third world county. Our roads and bridges are worn out.  Our highway rights of way are not adequately maintained.  Our state owned sideways and drainage systems are in horrific condition. State leaders are fighting about band-aids to solve the hemorrhaging funding for...

30 Sep Some say ‘bring it on’ and I say ‘no’ to nuclear waste

For more than 30 years I have wondered why SC has been so accepting as a spot for the storage of nuclear waste, be it low level in Barnwell or weapons grade at the Savannah River Site. What is never admitted when the government or a private enterprise wants to send us their waste to us, is that there is NO SUCH THING AS THE TEMPORARY STORAGE OF NUCLEAR WASTE.  It comes here, no one else will take it and it stays. Seemingly forever! Enjoy Bob Airial's syndicated cartoon which is so...

27 Sep If you want to learn about past Presidents, you might want to talk with Tyler

Two weeks ago at the 911 ceremony in the Park I met Tyler, a ten year old fifth grade student who was singing with the Riverview Charter School Choir. As we chatted afterwards, I learned that Tyler has a passion for the history of past presidents. He certainly knows more than I do so I invited him to on my television show which is broadcast by WHHI, then posted to my You Tube account and featured in the newsletter. The piece is still be edited so it will appear next week, but wanted to...

27 Sep Municipal Association Board Retreat: Fun Weekend, Stong Agenda for 2017

Over the weekend, as  Board Member,  I had the benefit of attending the Municipal Association of SC's annual Board retreat in Hartsville, SC. I had not been in the little city for many years, likely since 1976 when I was directing a congressional campaign in the 6th district. I was pleasantly surprised that the little disorganized village  surrounded by cotton fields has been transformed into a very beautiful small city, with older buildings restored for new uses, lush street scares, a surplus of parking opportunities, three hotels, Coker College and the Governor's school....
