Detour again for Boundary set July 29-Aug. 1

With the opening of a new intersection just weeks away at Beaufort’s Boundary Street and Robert Smalls Parkway, work there requires a traffic detour from Friday, July 29, through Aug. 1 for underground storm drainage work.

Part of Boundary Street will be closed near the Burger King and Dunkin’ Donut restaurants from 8 p.m. Friday until no later than sunset on Monday, Aug. 1.

Drivers will be detoured along the same route as during the June 24 weekend closure. The detour routes vehicles around the construction zone by using Parris Island Gateway near Cross Creek Shopping Center and Robert Smalls Parkway/SC170.

Local traffic will be able to access most businesses along the detour area, but authorities ask drivers to use extra caution and be patient.

“This detour will enable construction crews to replace a major storm drainage line that runs across the entire width of Boundary Street near the Burger King restaurant,” said Sammy Negron, project manager consultant. “We ask people to plan ahead for the detour, which might add a few minutes to their trip.”

City leaders are coordinating the detour with emergency services, including Beaufort County EMS, Beaufort police and fire departments, and the Burton Fire District.

Lighted message boards are in place to advise drivers of the detour, and signs will clearly guide drivers to the new route.

Next up: The new intersection of Boundary Street and Robert Smalls Parkway is on schedule to open in mid-August, complete with new traffic signals and turn lanes. Work cannot be completed at that intersection until the stormwater work is completed during the upcoming detour.

When completed, Boundary Street will remain a four-lane roadway but will feature improved intersections with traffic signals; left-turn lanes; and landscaped middle median; and sidewalks and pathways for pedestrians. The project is scheduled for completion in 2018.
