August 29, 2021

BEAUFORT, SC, – The Beaufort Arts Council/Mather Academy (www.beaufortartscouncil.org or www.matheracademy.org ) purchased the historic building formerly known as the Beaufort County Jail. Located at the corner of Monson and King Street in Downtown Beaufort, just one block from the Santa Elena History Center and in the midst of the Beaufort Arts District, this vacant historic building will soon become home to the King Street Arts Center, which will include BAC offices, an art gallery, and an extensive curriculum of art classes.

The Beaufort Arts Council, currently located at 916 Port Republic Street in historic downtown Beaufort will relocate to the new building upon completion of renovations. The new location lends the opportunity not only to host multiple art education opportunities, but large scale activities and events.

The King Street Arts Center will provide opportunities for artists, students, tourists, and residents to immerse themselves in unique art experiences. The proximity of the King Street Arts Center to places like the Santa Elena History Center, University of South Carolina Beaufort, Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, Black Chamber of Commerce, local art galleries and lodging accommodations adds greatly to the experience for residents and guests in Beaufort to participate in and grow the art community in Beaufort.

The President of the Beaufort Arts Council, Delene Miller comments “We’re very fortunate for this opportunity and excited to embark on this journey. Over the past year, the BAC, through Mather Academy has delivered high quality, professional level art instruction to students of all skill levels. Going forward, we are really upping the ante to infuse the arts on a larger scale by creating a destination for residents and visitors alike to have a one-of-a-kind experience.”

This would not be possible without continued community support through sponsorships, donations, memberships, class registrations, and volunteer participation. There are many ways to get involved and/or support the Beaufort Arts Council. Come to the BAC’s Beaux Arts Ball Fundraiser on November 12th to learn more! Tickets and sponsorships are available.
