29 Aug I have frequently mentioned “civic engagement”. What do I mean?

I frequently encourage  citizens to be more engaged in our community. I also started the Young Leaders of Beaufort to teach civic engagement to seventh and eighth graders. And I speak in schools, at civic association meetings and in surrounding communities inviting all to participate. From the bottom of my heart I believe we can make a difference in bettering our community.

I am not sure I have ever really defined what I mean by civic engagement. The following blog from Iowa State University explains what I am talking about.

A university, like a small city, is a community. So interchange Beaufort for Iowa State and you will understand.

Given what we watch and read in the news these days,  it could be very easy to turn your back, close your eyes and ears and walk away from civic engagement which is the back bone of a democratic system.
