When the newspaper asked me to submit an essay about Pat Conroy, I was daunted at first. They told me they wanted something a bit different from all that is filling cyber space through social media. I wanted to do no more than write about our huge loss and the memories that will last. So I wrote about what is but a microcosm of the many devoted relationships between Pat and his many, many friends.
