USCB Fine Arts Department Chair Chris Robinson and Friends Exhibit opens November 2 at the Center for the Arts
Chris Robinson, the new chair of the University of South Carolina Fine Arts Department, will be exhibiting his work with some of his past graduate students November 2 through December 19 at the Center for the Arts. USCB is honored to have Robinson join the faculty in a leadership role.
Robinson’s Southern Lights laser installation, which spanned the Columbia SC Congaree River between the Blossom and Gervais Street bridges, debuted the weekend before the historic total eclipse on Aug. 21 and will be on long term display starting in 2018. The artist and researcher has dedicated his 45-year career to working with light, lasers, and exploring the intersection between art and technology, concentrating on seeing the unseen. It’s fitting that Robinson, retiring this past summer after 42 years at the University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Art and Design, will leave a lasting statement on the connection between art and science.
Some of Robinson’s past students will be joining this exhibit; James Berry, Allison Denavant, Robert Keith, Joe Kendrick, Joshua Knight, Bernard Krusman, Marcella Kuykendall, Chad Penner, and Caley Pennington.
An opening reception is planned for Thursday, November 2 from 5:30 to 7 PM. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday 10 am till 5 pm and during CFA performances.
