BEAUFORT, SC- Beaufort Arts Council announces Mather Academy as the name of BAC’s educational initiatives. Similar to Penland, Haystack, and other craft schools throughout the nation, Mather Academy offers a variety of art classes and extended courses ranging in visual, craft, culinary, functional and performing arts. Classes are designed to attract residents, visitors and include multi-generational classes for families.

 

Classes and courses include, without limitation: glass mosaics, painting and drawing, sweet grass basket making, jewelry making and batiking. In addition to craft art education programs there will be culinary art education opportunities in 2016. Mather Academy classes and programs will be infused with
the culture and heritage of our unique area.
Registration for classes is available on-line at www.beaufortartscouncil.org or at the Arts Council offices at 2127 Boundary Street, Beaufort SC, formerly known as ARTworks.

 

BAC Executive Director Kim Sullivan says “Beaufort is a wonderful place to live and visit and the addition of Mather Academy to the community opens all sorts of opportunities to residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves not just in art, but in a culture and history that they won’t experience anywhere else. We are very excited and grateful for this opportunity to preserve and share the legacy started by Mrs. Mather.”

 

BAC Board President Dick Stewart says “As part of our mission at the Beaufort Arts Council, we provide exposure to the local heritage and rich artistic legacy and cultural uniqueness in our community to visitors as well as residents. Through Mather Academy, we honor the Mather School legacy and help keep that story alive while offering educational and training opportunities in arts and craft related fields with regional uniqueness.”
