Dragonboat Beaufort Announces Team Registration Open for DragonBoat Race Day 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Beaufort, SC] – DragonBoat Beaufort is pleased to announce that team registration is now open for DragonBoat Race Day 2016, which will be held Labor Day Weekend (September 2-3, 2016) in Henry C. Chambers Park in downtown Beaufort, SC. Over the last three years this event has become increasingly popular among locals and out-of-towners alike. The 2015 Dragonboat Race Day drew nearly 700 paddlers, 32 teams and thousands of spectators to the Beaufort seawall.

This will be the 4th annual event for the non-profit organization, although 2016 will be the first year that the event will take place in September. In past years, the event has taken place in July during the annual Beaufort Water Festival.

Anyone can form a dragonboat team to compete at DragonBoat Race Day 2016. A dragonboat team consists of 20 paddlers, 2 alternates (recommended) and one drummer. All teams will be trained how to safely and successfully paddle a dragonboat prior to DragonBoat Race Day with experienced coaches and boat steerers. On Race Day, teams will paddle in three races competing for medals. In addition, there will be awards for Best Tee Shirt Design, Best Tent Decoration, Best Team Spirit, Best Dressed Drummer, Most Money Raised by a Drummer on Race Day, Fastest Overall Team, Fastest Local Team, Top Fund Raising Team and Top Fund Raising Individual.

In the past teams have included civic clubs, community neighborhoods, local businesses, cancer-survivors, schools, and hospitals. Last year, teams raised over $65,000 which is used to support those impacted by cancer in Beaufort County. Dragonboat Beaufort awards outreach grants to local cancer patients to assist with specific needs they are unable to afford or for which they lack coverage.
