The inspiring story of Karola Siegel, a young immigrant who became celebrity sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, will be presented to Beaufort audiences this October.
Becoming Dr. Ruth, a play by Mark St. Germain, will be performed in an intimate, theatrical setting on the campus of Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs, 100 Clearwater way, Beaufort, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 and again Sunday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
Rabbi TZiPi Radonsky, local spiritual leader and gifted actor, stars as Dr. Ruth. The play is being directed by Suzanne Larson, well-known to Beaufort audiences as an actor, playwright and award-winning documentary producer.
Rabbi Radonsky said she was moved by Dr. Ruth’s ability to achieve a joyful life despite a childhood deeply affected by the terrible events of the holocaust.
“Ruthie arrived in America with little more than a small suitcase. Yet, through her positive nature and enthusiasm for life, she acquired a graduate degree and achieved much happiness. She is one of our inspirational heroines, yet so few people know her story.
“In fact, she was a sniper in the Israeli freedom fighters, speaks five languages and is 4ft.7 inches tall. There is more about Dr. Ruth that surprises people and we are excited about sharing her incredible story,” she said.
Bill Love, Director of Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs said he welcomes visitors to DSN to see the facility and the services provided to individuals with disabilities.
There is a suggested donation of $10 per person. Profits will be donated to the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition and to DSN. Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis or by reservation at sheralaloba@gmail.com.
