Track and Field Legend Jim Ryun to Visit Holy Trinity

BEAUFORT, S.C. - Olympian and Kansas Congressman Jim Ryun will be spending the day with Holy Trinity Classical Christian School students on February 12th. He will be sharing his remarkable life’s journey of being cut from his church’s baseball team to being rated by ESPN as the number one high school athlete of all time, beating Tiger Woods and LeBron James.

Congressman Ryun represented the United States of America on three Olympic teams and held numerous world records in the mile, 1500 meters, 800 meters and 880 yards. His achievements continue to merit media attention, having begun with ABC’s Wide World of Sports and the Today Show, continuing with appearances on Fox News, ESPN, and the 700 Club. He has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated 7 times, Newsweek, Runners’s World, Parade Magazine, and featured in many newspaper and magazine articles pertaining to his running career as well as his expertise as a Congressman.

Cross Country was Holy Trinity’s first official team sport when opening in 2012. And today, the school continues to have a large percentage of student athletes on the cross country team. According to 5th grade teacher and cross country co-coach, Hillary Tobin, “Holy Trinity has certainly embraced a culture of running since our inception, from cross country, to running club every Friday, and sprint competitions during recess, we are certainly a great audience for Congressman Ryun. Co-coach and Jr. High teacher, Josiah Tobin, continues, “Our students in particular are so excited to meet the first high schooler to run a sub 4 minute mile.”

Congressman Ryun is a frequent contributor to running and Christian publications. He and his family have authored a number of books together, including Courage to Run, a 60 day devotional reflecting on his life as an athlete, parent, and Congressman.

According to Headmaster Rev. Chad E. Lawrence, “Congressman Ryun has lived a life marked by faith strong faith in Christ, something we at Holy Trinity certainly value. We are grateful for the opportunity to hear him speak about running the race of life with courage, integrity, and eyes upon the Lord.”
