Youth and Leadership

22 Oct Youth and Leadership

Last Friday I had one of the most interesting days in a while when I accompanied the 36 Young Leaders of Beaufort on our visit to Riverview Charter School where they joined their peers and non-profit Stop Hunger Now in packaging forty thousand nutritious meals which will be shipped to  hungry children in overseas.

While I often question whether or not our young people are learning enough about leadership and compassion, the four hours spent gave me hope and made me proud as the assembly lines of hundreds of well organized and conscientiously working young people carefully measured and packaged plastic bags of nutritious food to be sent over seas.
Before we joined the Riverview students in the packed gymnasium, Fred Leyda the human services director for Beaufort County briefed our seventh and eigth students on poverty in our own back yard and what the many local agencies are doing to help those in need.
